A New Approach to Women’s Healthcare

It’s time we look at women’s healthcare a little differently

No matter the age, women’s health is challenging to navigate on your own. It is hard to find a provider that you can connect with, and it is harder to find someone who truly understands your needs. It’s no wonder that so many women feel confused, dismissed, or invalidated. With no clear way to distinguish between practice approaches and limited services, it makes sense when women quiet-quit healthcare or turn to the internet for products and services.

“Our health care system too often flattens what it means to be a woman,” says Dr. Cho, president of Almara Women’s Health. “Women shouldn’t feel frustrated or lost on how to navigate something as personal and intricate as their health.”

At Almara, we’re building leading-edge, whole-self, whole-life care around the specific health needs of women. Our goal? To provide the trifecta of gold standard care. This includes:

    • Health information to know how to take care of your body and mind
    • Dialogue with experts to collaborate on a personalized plan that works
    • Comprehensive services that go well beyond reproductive and pregnancy care

As Dr. Cho says, “So many people want to reduce women’s care to cervixes and uteruses. But in reality, women are so much more.”

    The Almara Difference

Large hospitals and healthcare networks are often intimidating, overwhelming, and complex — and can lead to treating specific health issues without addressing the root cause. Physicians often choose to practice at Almara because our approach allows them to do both. “We come to Almara because we want to build relationships with our patients for life,” says Dr. Cho. “By actively listening to broader concerns and goals — we get to treat the person not just a symptom.”

Unlike big system care and private-equity owned health models, Almara is physician-owned. This means we get to:

    • Integrate services and programs specifically around the needs of women
    • Spend more time talking over life plans, concerns, and what your friends are saying
    • Avoid unnecessary tests
    • Refer to experts beyond our ‘network’

For patients, it means more opportunities to discuss history, risks, and every question you have to make informed healthcare decisions with confidence. At Almara, it’s not just about what your provider recommends, but about what decision works best for you and your health.

    Why Almara?

Since the 1950s, our physician-owned practices across the Twin Cities have served three generations of women and counting. Together, our locations serve 45,000+ women and deliver 3,000+ babies annually.

But operating under seven different practice names was also adding to the healthcare noise and making it difficult for patients to understand their options. By coming together under Almara Women’s Health, we can provide women and individuals a clear, consolidated path to finding a relationship-focused provider, as well as one platform to learn more about issues affecting wellness. One name also gives us a louder voice to:

      • Recruit the best physicians
      • Advocate for hospital and insurance system change
      • Build more programs to understand how your body works and what it needs

      What Does Almara Mean?

Like women and women’s health, the name Almara is nuanced. Some interpretations of ‘mara’ focus on feminine energy, trickery, and dreams, while a deeper dive roots the word in strength and perseverance through change. The complexity and variations of this myth struck a chord, and we saw an opportunity to articulate the strength, resilience, and perseverance required to navigate change. By adding ‘all’ to the prefix, we created Almara — our take on inclusivity of all “womanhood” experiences, seeing wholeness, and walking together.

Almara is the perfect representation of our approach to medicine – to be the place where women’s health comes together, serving the complex and varied needs of women of all experiences, expressions, and ages. Rather than restricting or oversimplifying, we choose to face complexities and nuances head-on, providing personalized, comprehensive, and compassionate care.

      Will My Care Change?

For those who have long been a patient of one of our practices, your care and routine stay the same. The change does mean that in the future, you will have more opportunities to participate in even more robust services and programs, including: metabolic health, bone density scans, body composition scans, menopause support, lactation services, and high-risk breast screening.

On top of this, we’re also developing an online health library for women to easily access basic information on topics such as heart, bone, sleep, social, and sexual health. Stay tuned for our most comprehensive health resource to date, one that finally addresses the unique biology, physiology, and chemistry of women. Like WebMD, but for women.

      What’s Not Changing?

Everything you have now—current provider, type of care, clinic location, and approach—isn’t changing. Almara is here to provide our patients with the same personalized, relationship-based, small on-call team that you’ve come to know and love. Our  Patient Portals are still accessible for all your information and forms, with access to information about your personal clinic as well.
