DiVa Laser FAQs

I've never heard of vaginal health. What are common symptoms and why?
We have not done a good job of educating women on normal vaginal changes that happen with hormone fluctuations. Because of this, most patients are hesitant to speak up about these real, yet intimate, concerns. As women age, decreasing estrogen impairs the growth of new cells when older cells die. When enough cells have been lost, layers of the vagina disappear, leading to atrophy of vaginal walls. Vaginal tissues become thinner, shiny, wrinkled, and parchment-like. The remaining cells struggle to lubricate, maintain a healthy pH, and produce the collagen that allows vaginal tissues to stretch and support sex and the bladder. All of this can lead to burning, itching, infections, incontinence, and painful sex. All women will experience these symptoms at some point after menopause if nothing is done. Vaginal atrophy is normal, but can also be easily treated and doesn’t have to be a part of aging.
After completion of a DiVa vaginal treatment, patients can expect improved laxity and function of vaginal tissues, improved lubrication, improved sexual function, and improvement in minor urinary stress incontinence.
Normal life can resume immediately after your visit! Sex, soaking, and swimming can resume in 3 days. Patients are also advised not to place anything in the vagina for 3 days post-procedure.
Are there other vaginal health treatments for painful sex, chronic itching or pain, and leakage other than laser?
There are many! Hormone replacement therapy is a great option for our patients dealing with vaginal atrophy. Our DiVa vaginal laser treatment is a wonderful substitute for patients who either dislike or cannot use hormone replacement therapy as a treatment option.
Patients experience some mild discomfort. A topical numbing is applied for 15-20 minutes prior.
We have performed hundreds of DiVa laser treatments since 2020. DiVa is associated with very minimal risks/complications. There is some risk for infection as it does cause micro-injuries to the vaginal skin layer. These risks are reduced with the 3-day pelvic rest period.
